What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern, highly efficient image format used by many websites because it loads much faster than JPG. You'll usually get an .avif file when saving or downloading an image from such a site — but since the format is new, many programs and older devices don't recognize it yet.

How to open an AVIF file

  1. Fastest way: drop the file in the box above — you'll see it instantly, and you can convert it to JPG or PNG right away.
  2. Windows: Windows 10 (with the free AV1 Video Extension) and Windows 11 open AVIF in the Photos app. Otherwise, use Paint (Windows 11) or an updated browser.
  3. Mac / iPhone: macOS 13+ and iOS 16+ open AVIF natively in Preview and Photos. Older versions need a converter.
  4. Android: Android 12+ supports AVIF in Google Photos and most gallery apps.
  5. Browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (16.4+) all display AVIF — just drag the file into a browser window.

Still can't open it? Convert it

If your device or app refuses to open the file, the universal fix is converting AVIF to JPG — the format every application since the 1990s understands. Use the converter above: drop the file, choose JPG, and download. The converted file will open in Paint, Photoshop, Word, WhatsApp, email, printers — everywhere, no exceptions.

Why do websites use AVIF if it's hard to open?

Because it's roughly 50% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, which makes pages load faster. The format was designed for the web first, so it works great in browsers — desktop apps are still catching up. Converting to JPG or PNG is the bridge until your favourite tools catch on.
